What is a Genesis Recall?

Genesis is the luxury brand of Hyundai Motor Group, known for its “Athletic Elegance” design, quiet interiors, and technologically advanced sedans and SUVs, including the G70, G80, GV70, and G90. While the brand emphasizes quality, it is not exempt from recalls.

A Genesis recall is an action initiated by the manufacturer or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that identifies affected vehicle identification numbers (VINs). It offers a no-cost remedy at authorized dealers to address safety risks or restore compliance.

Why You Should Check the Genesis Recall History?

Planning to purchase a used Genesis? Do a recall check first. Using the VIN ensures hidden defects are fixed for free, protecting your safety and budget. Below are some reasons why you should check the recall:

Avoid Unsafe Genesis

Compliance

A quick Genesis Recall Check shows if your vehicle has open safety fixes. Driving or selling with an unresolved recall can invite legal problems, complicate warranty claims, and reduce buyer trust. Under U.S. federal Law, manufacturers must repair safety defects at no cost. So act now and document completion!

Check Common Safety-Related Issues

Checking your Genesis recall history is essential for uncovering safety issues like no sound from speakers, idle fluctuation concerns, power steering problems, and more. Hidden defects may not show immediately, but can lead to danger if ignored. A Genesis recall check keeps you safe, compliant, and confident every time you drive.

Common Issues Leading to Genesis Recall

Genesis vehicles have faced several recalls due to safety and reliability concerns. Common issues in Genesis recalls can create, fire hazard and stalling. Below are some of the causes behind the Genesis recall notices.

Fire Hazard

Electrical shorts in braking/ABS circuits

Some Genesis recalls were initiated due to the risk of the ABS module shorting internally, which could cause overcurrent and fire hazards, even when parked. The issue affects some of the 2015–2016 Hyundai Genesis, 2017–2020 Genesis G80, and 2019–2021 Genesis G70.

In September 2023, another issue emerged, stating that brake fluid leakage in certain ABS modules could lead to electrical shorts and fires, resulting in additional free dealer service and notifications to owners. NHTSA advises owners to park outside and receive a free remedy.

Water intrusion into electrical parts

In February 2024, Genesis warned vehicle owners about water entering the starter solenoid. This can cause an electrical short and possibly lead to a fire in the engine bay. To reduce this risk, owners should park their vehicles outside until they receive a free repair. Dealers will install a relay kit to limit power to the solenoid and lower the risk.

In March 2024, a different problem was found with the GV70: water could get into the transmission harness connector. This might cause strange signals and an unexpected shift from Park to Neutral. Dealers are providing a no-cost rework to fix this issue.

Low-pressure fuel pump defects

The problem lies with a small plastic impeller inside the low-pressure fuel pump. When temperatures rise, the impeller can swell and cause friction, leading to mechanical resistance until the pump fails.

Drivers may experience hesitation or a sudden loss of power as a result. In November 2023, Genesis issued internal instructions regarding this issue and formally reported the defect in April 2024. The affected models include the GV70 (2022–2023), GV80 (2021–2023), G80 (2021–2023), and G90 (2022–2023).

Sudden Power Loss / Stalling

ICE models

There is a common issue affecting multiple models of Genesis SUVs and sedans that can lead to stalling. In certain ICE Genesis vehicles, the low-pressure fuel pump may lose output if its plastic impeller distorts due to warm conditions. According to Genesis’ safety filing on April 19, 2024, the affected models include the 2022–2023 GV70, 2021–2023 GV80/G80, and 2022–2023 G90.

Additionally, the 2019–2023 G70 2.0T is also prone to stalling. In this model, a valve in the high-pressure fuel pump can wear over time, resulting in a mixture that is too rich. This can cause rough idling, misfires, and a loss of power, particularly at low speeds.

EV models

Genesis EVs were recalled after investigators traced sudden power loss to the Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU), which can stop charging the 12-volt battery. Once the 12-volt runs down, the car enters fail-safe and can lose all drive power while moving.

Affected Genesis models include GV60 (2023–2025), Electrified GV70 (2023–2025), and Electrified G80 (2023–2025). Dealers inspect/replace the ICCU and fuse and update software at no charge.

Other Notable Issues

Instrument cluster/display failures

Genesis traced sudden digital gauge cluster outages to erroneous startup logic in the instrument cluster (CLU). The screens could flicker, go dim, or go blank, hiding speed and warning lights. Impacted models total over 32,000 vehicles: 2023–2024 G80, 2023–2024 GV80, 2025 GV70, and 2023–2025 Electrified GV70. The fix is a free software update at retailers.

Understanding the Genesis Recall Process

The NHTSA begins the recall process by investigating reported issues. If a defect is found, the manufacturer must issue a recall. See the steps of their process below.

Report the Problem

If your Genesis shows a safety concern, file a complaint with NHTSA. Your report enters their database; when many Genesis owners cite the same issue, it can trigger an official investigation.

Investigation

After a Genesis-related complaint is filed, NHTSA runs a staged review to decide if a recall is warranted.

  • Screening: Owner complaints are checked for credibility, supporting evidence, and patterns across Genesis VINs.
  • Analysis: Conducts a formal defect review; outcomes (including denials) are documented publicly in the Federal Register.
  • Investigate the Issues: When Genesis’s safety concerns are confirmed, NHTSA launches a formal investigation, ending in either no defect or a recall.
  • Recall Management: NHTSA ensures owners are notified and monitors repair completion rates.

Recalls

If a Genesis model or component poses a safety risk or violates regulations, Genesis must alert owners and provide a remedy. Most recalls are voluntary, and remedies can include free repair, replacement, refund, or buyback.

How Genesis Vehicle Recalls Are Handled

When a safety issue arises, Genesis identifies the defect, works with NHTSA, and alerts owners. You confirm by VIN, then schedule a free dealer repair. This three-way process finds problems fast, notifies drivers, and restores safety and compliance.

Automaker Role

When a safety risk appears, Genesis (Hyundai Motor America) must move first. The manufacturer investigates the defect, reports to NHTSA, and if confirmed, they launch a recall with owner notices and a free fix at authorized retailers.

NHTSA’s Role

The NHTSA is responsible for identifying patterns, conducting investigations, and ensuring that issues are resolved. It reviews owner complaints and manufacturer data using a risk-based approach, which can lead to formal investigations and potentially a recall if a safety defect or non-compliance is found.

Once Genesis initiates a recall campaign, NHTSA monitors the availability of remedies, the flow of necessary parts, and the completion rates. Vehicle owners can check their recall status using their VIN.

Your Role as the Vehicle Owner

Stay informed and take action regarding Genesis recalls. Check if your vehicle is affected and schedule a free remedy at an authorized retailer. Keep a record of the service and inquire about parts availability if needed. Your follow-up can help improve completion rates.

Report any new issues, like stalling or warning lights, to the NHTSA. Multiple complaints can lead to quicker investigations and recalls. Recent incidents include instrument panel failures and fuel pump fire risks, emphasizing the importance of owner involvement in ensuring vehicle safety. Your actions can help address hazards and make vehicles safer.

FAQ about Genesis Recalls Check

Yes. Recall fixes are free for all owners. Federal rules require manufacturers to provide a no-charge remedy. Run our Genesis Recall Check to confirm your VIN, see parts/appointment guidance, and book service with an authorized retailer. Keep documentation for insurance and resale.

Safety recalls usually stay open for the vehicle’s life, but federal rules make the no-cost remedy available for about 15 years from the first sale. Non-safety campaigns may end sooner.

Always check your VIN for the latest Lincoln recall status to stay updated.

Open recalls mean unresolved risk. Some Genesis campaigns instruct owners to park outside or avoid driving until repaired. Use our Genesis Recall Check to see your exact guidance, then contact an authorized dealer for the no-charge remedy (towing may be available).

If your notice lacks that language, schedule the free fix promptly and limit trips to the dealership.

Awaiting parts? Prioritize safety first (minimize driving, follow any safety warnings), then document everything (dates, calls, emails) and ask your dealer about temporary accommodations.

Repair length varies by parts and complexity. If parts aren’t ready, lead times can extend. Use our Genesis Recall Check to see your exact campaign, then ask the dealer about loaners, rideshare, or valet options while your car is in.

Dealers and lenders prefer no open recalls. Close the campaign and keep proof to protect trade-in value and insurance. Use our Genesis Recall Check to confirm status, schedule the no-cost fix, then save the work order, dealer stamp, and photos of the updated cluster/software if applicable.

Compared with peers, Genesis shows competitive reliability and strong owner satisfaction, but recalls still arise (fuel pumps, cluster software, fire-risk alerts). What matters is closing them quickly. Start with our Genesis Recall Check, confirm by VIN or license plate, and schedule the free fix to keep financing, insurance, and resale smooth.
