What Is a Ferrari Recall?

Ferrari recalls occur when a defect poses a threat to the safety or performance of its vehicles. These recalls are critical safety actions that ensure drivers receive free repairs at authorized dealerships.

Examples include the brake fluid reservoir cap defect affecting 23,000 cars from 2005–2022, and a fuse box issue in 2023–2025 Purosangue models that risks short circuits and weakened braking. Both highlight Ferrari’s commitment to owner safety.

Why You Should Check the Ferrari Recall History

Before investing in a Ferrari, it’s crucial to check the VIN for past recalls. A recall check helps uncover safety issues, ensures free repairs are claimed, and safeguards both your driving experience and your car’s long-term value.

Avoid Unsafe Ferrari

Recalls happen when a Ferrari fails to meet safety standards or develops dangerous defects. Acting quickly prevents accidents, protects performance, and ensures free repairs at certified dealers.

Car Compliance Checking

Compliance

Ferrari recalls are more than safety notices. They ensure compliance with federal safety standards. Unrepaired recalls can make a car unsafe, diminish resale value, and signal systemic issues. Buyers of used Ferraris must verify recall status, since sellers are not always legally bound to repair defects. A recall check protects safety and investment.

Check Common Safety-Related Issues

A Ferrari recall check is vital for spotting hidden problems, such as brake fluid reservoir caps to misleading tire-pressure alerts. Even small defects can escalate into serious risks. Verifying your recall history ensures your Ferrari meets safety standards, protects performance, and keeps you confident on the road.

Common Issues Leading to the Ferrari Recall

Ferrari vehicles have faced several recalls due to safety and reliability concerns. Common issues include brake fluid reservoir caps and misleading tire-pressure alerts. Below are some of the causes behind the Ferrari recall notices:

Braking-system safety

Brake Fluid Reservoir Cap

In July 2022, Ferrari recalled 23,555 cars spanning model years 2005–2022 because the brake-fluid reservoir cap might not vent properly. The lack of ventilation can create a vacuum in the reservoir, leading to a brake fluid leak and a partial or total loss of braking. Dealers will replace the cap free of charge and update the instrument-panel software to improve the low brake-fluid warning.

Fuse Box Short Circuit

Ferrari recalled an estimated 541 Purosangue SUVs (model years 2023–2025, built July 25, 2022–February 18, 2025) because the fuse box power supply can contact the passenger-side footrest, causing a short circuit that decreases braking capability and triggers a brake warning light with a pop-up message. Dealers will install a free plastic spacer to prevent contact. Production was corrected in February 2025. Owner letters are scheduled by September 21, 2025.

Occupant-protection systems

Airbag Malfunction

Ferrari has issued multiple airbag recalls, most notably tied to the Takata inflator crisis affecting model years 2009–2018. In a crash, a defective passenger-side inflator can explode and send metal fragments, risking severe injury or death; the remedy is free replacement inflators. In February 2023, Ferrari also recalled 2021–2023 SF90 Stradale and 2022 SF90 Spider because the passenger airbag could strike a medium-size child seat; dealers replaced the M-size passenger seat with an XL seat at no cost.

Fuel/thermal risk

Engine Fire Risk From Fuel Leak

In May 2023, Ferrari recalled certain 2022–2023 296 GTB and 2023 296 GTS vehicles (≈425 U.S. units; built March 1, 2021–April 20, 2023) because the aluminum fuel-tank connecting pipe can contact the high-voltage battery protection cover (glass fiber/inox steel), leading to corrosion, a fuel leak, and fire risk near an ignition source.

Ferrari instructed owners not to drive the car and required dealers to halt sales until repaired. The remedy is to replace the connecting pipe with a new part reinforced by an anti-corrosive protective sleeve (free of charge; ~2 hours). Ferrari also implemented insulating material in production on April 20, 2023.

Other Notable Issues

Tire-Pressure Warning Accuracy

In 2015, Ferrari recalled certain 2014–2015 LaFerrari vehicles (85 units; built May 15, 2014–Mar 4, 2015) because, after a puncture, the TPMS displayed “Low Tyre Pressure — Max speed 50 mph” instead of “Low Tyre Pressure — Do not proceed.”

That incorrect message (intended for vehicles with run-flat tires) could lead drivers to continue driving and increase crash risk. Dealers update the TPMS software free of charge; owner letters began in July 2015.

Understanding the Ferrari Recall Process

The NHTSA begins the recall process by investigating reported issues. If a defect is found, the manufacturer must issue a recall. See the steps of their process below

Report the Problem

Filing a complaint is the first action you should take. When you file a complaint, provide as much detail as possible about the issue. Once submitted, your report is stored in the NHTSA database. When multiple owners report similar problems with the same vehicle, it can indicate a safety defect and may trigger an official investigation.

Investigation

Once a complaint is submitted, the NHTSA follows a multi-step process to determine whether a recall is necessary.

  • Screening: The NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) reviews all filed complaints and other information to identify patterns or trends related to safety defects.
  • Analysis: Defect petitions are reviewed in detail. If denied, the decision and reasoning are publicly posted in the Federal Register.
  • Investigate the Issues: If the agency identifies a potential safety defect that creates an unreasonable risk of accident, injury, or death for the Ferrari, NHTSA launches a formal investigation, ending in either no defect or a recall.
  • Recall Management: NHTSA ensures owners are notified and monitors repair completion rates.

Recalls

A safety recall means the manufacturer must inform owners and correct the problem. Recalls happen when a vehicle or component is unsafe or doesn’t meet regulations. Most are voluntary, and manufacturers are required to repair, replace, refund, or buy back the affected vehicle.

How Ferrari Vehicle Recalls Are Handled

When a safety issue occurs in a Ferrari, three key groups are involved in the recall process. They work together to detect defects, notify drivers, and ensure repairs are completed to keep vehicles safe.

Automaker Role

A Ferrari recall means the automaker oversees the entire process. Ferrari identifies the defect, develops the remedy, alerts affected owners, and ensures certified dealerships perform the necessary repairs.

NHTSA’s Role

The NHTSA, through its Office of Defects Investigation, oversees how Ferrari recalls are managed. NHTSA ensures Ferrari properly notifies owners, verifies that recall repairs and remedies are carried out, and monitors compliance. It also provides the public with timely and accurate recall information so drivers can stay informed and safe.

Your Role as the Vehicle Owner

In a Ferrari recall, the vehicle owner’s primary role is to check if their car is affected. You can check if your vehicle has a recall history through our Ferrari recall lookup by VIN. If you don’t have a VIN handy, you can use your license plate instead. If you have an active recall or your Ferrari, you can contact an Authorised Ferrari Dealer as soon as possible to schedule a free repair. Owners should also follow any specific instructions from Ferrari, and can also contact the manufacturer directly with concerns.

No. Ferrari safety recalls are permanent. In January 2024, Ferrari reaffirmed that safety recalls never expire. If your Ferrari is having an open recall, you can schedule free repairs at any dealer, regardless of ownership history. Service campaigns, however, can expire and may not cover older vehicles.

As of August 2025, Ferrari recalls include the 2023–2025 Purosangue for a fuse box short circuit that reduces braking. The 2023 Portofino M, F8 Spider, and 2024 Roma Spider face a driveshaft screw issue. Hybrid models are also affected: the 2022–2024 SF90 Stradale/Spider for oil leaks and the 2022–2023 Ferrari 296 GTB/GTS for fuel pipe corrosion and fire risk.

The Ferrari 458 has faced several recalls in recent years. In July 2022, Ferrari recalled 2010–2015 458 Italia, Spider, and Speciale models for brake fluid reservoir cap defects that could cause brake failure. Other recalls include a 2012 fuel filler flapper leading to leaks and the Takata airbag crisis (2013–2015 models), where inflators could explode in a crash.

Yes. Ferrari 458s can be safe after recalls if the work was completed. The Ferrari 458 recall history includes life-threatening issues like engine bay fires (2010), leaking brake caps (2010–2015), and exploding Takata airbags (2013–2015).

If your Ferrari recall can’t be fixed, don’t panic! You still have options. In some cases, delays happen because parts are unavailable, especially with complex models like the 2023–2025 Purosangue recall.

If a fix isn’t available, you can request a buyback, file an NHTSA complaint, or pursue Lemon Law rights. Always confirm recall status with a Ferrari VIN lookup.
