Why Check a Ram VIN Number with a VIN Decoder

Before buying, selling, or insuring a Ram, running a Ram VIN check is a smart move. It helps confirm the car's original details, past records, and hidden risks that may not be revealed by a test drive. Here's how it can help:

Verify Vehicle Specs

The Ram VIN decoder confirms key specifications like engine size, body type, and trim. This helps you confirm the car matches the seller's claims before making a deal. It also helps sellers avoid mistakes when listing their vehicles for sale. Buyers can trust that the information is accurate, reducing confusion and saving time.

Uncover Accident History

A paid VIN lookup report can show past accidents, damage, or insurance claims. This protects buyers from buying cars with hidden issues or unsafe conditions. By checking the accident history by VIN, you can estimate repair costs and check whether safety systems were properly fixed. It also helps avoid cars with long-term structural damage.

Spot Title Issues

The Dodge Ram VIN check reveals title problems like salvage, flood, or rebuilt status. Knowing this ensures you avoid vehicles with risky or unclear ownership records. Title problems lower the resale value and may cause insurance difficulties. By conducting a title check by VIN, you save money and avoid stressful surprises later.

Check For Recalls

The RAM VIN decoder alerts you to open recalls. This allows owners to schedule repairs quickly and ensures the vehicle meets safety and performance requirements. Staying updated on recalls prevents accidents caused by defective parts. It also helps buyers confirm whether previous owners completed required repairs.

Track Ownership Records

The Ram truck history report includes past ownership changes. This helps in determining whether the car was well-maintained or passed between multiple owners too quickly. A vehicle with fewer owners usually has better care. Too many transfers could signal problems that made past owners sell it quickly.

Increase Resale Trust

Sellers who provide VIN number check reports build trust with buyers. It shows transparency, proving that the Ram truck is reliable and free from hidden problems. This can make the selling process faster and smoother. Buyers feel safer making a purchase when all details are open and verified.

RAM VIN Number Location: Where to Search

A Ram VIN number is a unique code assigned to every Ram truck, acting like its fingerprint. You can find the truck VIN number in several locations:
Photo of Infographics, pointing where the VIN can be found on a car
  • On the driver's side dashboard (visible through the windshield)
  • Open the driver's door and look at the door pillar. A sticker shows the VIN below the bar code.
  • Open the hood. Check the firewall top, passenger's side engine bay, shock tower, or inner fender for the VIN.
  • On trucks, check the passenger's frame rail near the rear cab mount. The VIN is stamped into the frame or on a plate.
  • Many trucks have a body code plate behind the passenger headlight. The VIN is digits 7–23 on the second line.
  • Ram often prints the full VIN on the engine and transmission. Shorter numbers are model or serial codes for those parts.
  • You can also find the VIN on body parts like fenders, bumpers, hood, doors, and panels. Salvage parts may not match.

How Can I Read a Ram VIN Number?

A Ram VIN has 17 characters divided into three sections:
Photo of Infographics showing how to read a VIN number to obtain Vehicle Descriptions which identifies Model, Engine, Body, Style, etc. and Vehicle Identification, Plant Country, Region/Maker, Country and World Manufacturer Identifier.
  • World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI): The first three characters (1-3) show the manufacturer and country of origin.
  • Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS): This is represented by characters 4-9, and it describes details like body style, engine, and model.
  • Vehicle Identifier Section (VIS): The last 8 digits of the Ram VIN number reveal the production year, assembly plant, and serial number.
Character (Symbol)
What it reveals?
First Character: Country of Origin
If the first digit is a 1,4, or 5, the car was built in the USA. Other common characters are “2” = Canada, “3” = Mexico. European vehicles use characters S to Z.
Second Character: Manufacturer
This identifies the manufacturer. While it’s “B” or “D” for Fiat Chrysler, it’s a Daimler Chrysler with characters “C” or “D”.
Third Character: Manufacturing Plant
The third digit shows the manufacturing plant, but since it may represent several plants in one region, use the 11th digit for the exact location.
Fourth Character: Safety System
This reveals the safety system, and here are some common characters: “E” = driver and passenger airbags, “J” and “K” = multistage airbags, while “H and L: = front and side curtain airbags.
Fifth Character: Model
The model is coded here, and some characters include: “A” = Ram 2WD light duty, “B” = Durango 4WD, “D” = Durango 2WD, and “E” = Dakota 2WD.
Sixth Character: Equipment Level
This can be economy (1), low (L), medium (M), high line (N), high (4), premium (5), sport (S), and special (7).
Seventh Character: Body Type
Two characters identifying a ram’s body type are “8” = Truck, and “D” = Van.
Eight Character: Engine
The 8th digit codes for the engine, and here are some common engine codes available in modern Rams:
G = 3.5l V6
H = 5.7I HEMI V8
Z = 8.3L V10
D = 3.0l Turbo Diesel
Ninth Character: Security Check Digit
The 9th digit is the check digit and helps to ensure the authenticity of the VIN. It’s calculated using the other 16 digits.
Tenth Character: Model Year
This represents the model year, and it alternates between numbers (0-9) and letters, excluding “O”, “Z”, and “I”. E.g., “P” indicates a 2023 Ram model, while “1” means a 2001 model.
Eleventh Character: Assembly Plant
This indicates where the vehicle was built. The factory codes for Ram include:
A = Auburn Hills, Michigan
J = St. Louis, Missouri
S = Dodge City, Warren, Michigan
D = Belvidere, Illinois
T = Toluca, Mexico
X = Osnabrueck, Germany
Y = Steyr, Austria
Twelfth to Seventeenth: Serial Number
Characters 12-17 represent the serial or production number. This distinguishes a Ram truck from the other with the same model and manufactured in the same plant.
