Buyers know exactly what they are purchasing, and sellers can accurately describe their Mercury to attract serious buyers. Provides Vehicle History

A full Mercury VIN check helps buyers check accidents, ownership history, liens, recalls, or mileage issues. Sellers who provide a clean vehicle history record increase confidence and can help sell faster at fair prices. This transparency makes the buying process smoother and less stressful.

Helps in Pricing

The VIN decoder for Mercury car search supports fair pricing by comparing a vehicle’s history and condition with market standards. Buyers avoid overpaying, while sellers can set the right asking price backed by verifiable information from the VIN decoding. This creates a fair deal where both parties feel satisfied.

Aids in Long-Term Planning

The Mercury VIN decoder provides details about engine, transmission, and maintenance records. How Can I Read a Mercury VIN Number?

Every Mercury vehicle has a 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Each digit or letter in the VIN has a specific meaning. Together, they tell the story of the car—where it was built, what model it is, and when it was made. Here’s how to read the three  parts of the VIN:

Infographics showing how to read a VIN number to obtain Vehicle Descriptions which identifies Model, Engine, Body, Style, etc. and Vehicle Identification, Plant Country, Region/Maker, Country and World Manufacturer Identifier.

Character 1-3: The World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI)

The first section identifies the manufacturer and country of origin.

  • 1st Character – Country of Origin: The first digit shows where the vehicle was built. For Mercury, a “1” means the car was made in the United States.
  • 2nd and 3rd Characters – Manufacturer Details: These two digits identify the brand. In Mercury VINs, “M” stands for Mercury, and “2” shows it is a passenger car.

Character 4–9: The Vehicle Descriptor (VDS)

This section describes the model, body, restraint type, and engine, and includes a security check digit (9th character) to validate the accuracy of the VIN.

  • 4th to 8th Characters – Vehicle Description: This section describes the car in more detail. It may include the model, engine type, body style, and other important features.
  • 9th Character – Check Digit: This is a special number used for security. It makes sure the VIN is valid by following a calculation set by the Department of Transportation.

Characters 10-17: The Vehicle Identifier Section (VIS)

In this section, you will find the model year, assembly plant, and a unique serial number used for production tracking and recall checks

  • 10th Character – Model Year: This digit shows the model year of the car. For vehicles built after 1980, letters of the alphabet (except I, O, Q, U, and Z) are used in repeating cycles to mark the year.
  • 11th Character – Assembly Plant: This digit shows where the vehicle was assembled. Mercury cars were built in different factories across the U.S., including plants in Missouri, California, and Georgia.
  • 12th to 17th Characters – Serial Number: The last six digits are the production number. These numbers are unique to each Mercury and identify the exact vehicle and when it was made.

Five Interesting Facts About Mercury

  • Mercury’s annual sales peaked in 1978 at around 580,000 units, marking its most commercially successful year as a mid-luxury brand nestled between Ford and Lincoln.
  • The Cougar stands as Mercury’s best-selling nameplate, with nearly 3 million units produced over 34 years, second only to the Grand Marquis, which enjoyed 36 years of production and over 2.7 million units built.
  • Ford discontinued Mercury in 2010, and the last Mercury, a Grand Marquis, rolled off the line on January 4, 2011, ending a 72-year legacy in automotive history.
  • In its later years, Mercury suffered from blurred identity due to heavy “badge engineering” with Ford models (like the Sable, Milan, Villager, and Mountaineer). This dilution led to reduced market appeal and relevance.
  • Mercury vehicles such as the Milan, sold between 2006 and 2012, were part of massive Takata airbag recalls, with Ford urging owners of unrepaired affected vehicles not to drive them for safety reasons.
